I confirm that the work on this website is entirely my own and does not include any work completed by anyone other than myself, except where clearly stated otherwise, and that sources have been appropriately referenced.

Final Project

For my final project, I have been set the task of creating a walking simulator, which either focuses on mechanics, or focuses on the environment. I've chosen to go with the environment, and I've chosen the aesthetic of a Prison.

Within my final project, I have to have 5 different key mechanics, as well as a rather large environment to explore.

My 3 Ideas

Idea 1: Prison Escape

My first idea is to base my walking simulator closely off of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and The Escapists, making a game about escaping a prison. This game would focus on gathering several different items which could slowly lead you towards escaping, unlocking more and more of the prison as you go on. I would also focus on adding in puzzles to give it an element of mystery, and possibly have more than 1 way to escape.

I think the main strengths of a prison escape would be that I could use lots of the same models, however with this I would not be using many 3D Modelling skills, so I wouldn't improve much in that department.

Idea 2: Abandoned School Escape

My second idea is to make an abandoned school, filled with strange puzzles. This would mainly be inspired by Ao Oni. Within this school there'd be several rooms which are out of place, rooms which lead to emptiness, and other strange and bizarre phenomena. I'd also potentially add ghosts as red herrings, harmless phantoms which can't actually harm you but are there to toy with you. It'd also be interesting if you could be chased, however I think this would be straying too far away from the walking simulator genre.

One of the main strengths of a school with a ghostly atmosphere would definitely be the amount of freedom I could have with the strange rooms and several different ways to die, however this would also take a very long time and would require lots of unique models. Focusing on mechanics would make this a lot harder for this genre.

Idea 3: Alien Forest

My third idea would be a forest which is on another planet, I got this idea when I played Xenoblade Chronicles 2, on the first area you go to, being a large forest with bizarre creatures, something about it was slightly off, yet familiar as well. The water was murky, but very reflective, and the trees were all long and thin, with thick leaves. I think something similar to this would be great to base a walking simulator off of, but definitely not for mechanics.

A strength of this one would be that I could re-use lots of different types of trees and use the terrain building feature to create a large atmosphere, however, being able to make lots of different creatures would be incredibly difficult in a short amount of time.

Verdict:

I decided to go with the prison idea due to it being able to get the most mechanics out of it, and how easy it would be to model in a short period of time. It would be the most suited for this project and that is why I decided to go with it.

Project and Proposal

00:00 / 07:09

Although the PowerPoint above states the target age to be 16, I ended up changing this to 12+ due to me not adding in the journal, or anything graphic. I believe that my game is more suited to that demographic rather than exclusively 16+ because there is nothing in my game which would make it exclusively a Pegi-16, no bad language, no sexual references, no drugs nor alcohol, however there was an element of fear, with the dark atmosphere, and the prison setting being rather unsettling in appearance.

The video was over-exposed, so I have the audio from my recording of my powerpoint, with the powerpoint attached (see above)
